If there was ever a time to try out a Hawaiian skincare line, it would be on the cusp of the summer season. June’s Beauty Hero box featured Honua Skincare, which I had never heard of previously. This brand is founded by a Hawaiian woman, Kapua, who is dedicated to formulating superior products using Hawaiian botanicals, phytonutrients, and minerals. Kapua often accessorizes her hair with flowers, so a handmade flower was also included in the box to represent her Aloha spirit.
The hero product is the Aloha Youth Serum, which retails for $58, and the sidekick is the Olena Turmeric Beauty Oil, which retails for $48. This makes the total value $106, which well surpasses the $38 monthly box fee.
If you are not familiar with Beauty Heroes, it is a luxury green beauty box which features one full-sized ‘hero’ product and one ‘sidekick’ product each month. You can check it out more here.
Aloha Youth Serum
This is a milky serum filled with luxurious ingredients such as coconut water, rose hydrosol, aloe, hibiscus, comfrey, turmeric, and a variety of oils. It is beautifully floral and herbal-scented, which I primary detect from the ylang ylang oil. It feels very smoothing on my face, absorbs very quickly, and works well in conjunction with their beauty oil.
Ōlena Beauty Oil
This is a fairly silky feeling oil that absorbs into the skin well. I use this either after or mixed in with the Aloha Youth Serum, and the pair work to smooth, even, and brighten my face. Turmeric has always worked well for my skin, as it is a strong anti-inflammatory, and the quality of this product leaves nothing to be desired. This also contains chia, kukui, and noni for additional hydration properties. This oil offers mid-level moisturization as it keeps my face soft and smooth, but does not eliminate any stubborn dry patches. While I’m not sure I could use this in the winter, it makes a great summertime treat for the skin.
I must say that the scent of this product is a bit gnarly. This face oil contains tamanu, which is pretty unforgettable if you have ever used it before. It offers some strong -and somewhat stinky- undertones. I am willing to overlook the scent though, since the smell wears off quickly. Plus the oil helps my skin look pretty dang good in the morning, so I can’t complain!
If you have tried anything from Honua Skincare before, what did you think?
